In the morning your #destinationserbia tour guide will pick you up from your accommodation. We set off to Western Serbia, and on our way we’ll pass through Užice – the biggest town and the center of Western Serbia. A brief stop in Užice allows us to explore Stari Grad, a 14th-century fortress perched on a cliff high above the Djetinja River valley, providing stunning views of the town.
Continuing our tour, we travel to Mokra Gora, village acclaimed “The Best Tourism Village in the World” by World Tourism Organization in 2021. Mokra Gora gained global fame largely due to the iconic Shargan Eight train. This historic railway once formed part of the route connecting Belgrade to Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast via Sarajevo. Passengers traversed the rugged Balkan landscapes aboard these vintage carriages, immersing themselves in the natural splendor of the region. While the railway was eventually overshadowed by modernization, a 15km stretch of the line has been meticulously restored and is now one of the Balkans' premier tourist attractions. Here, we embark on a nostalgic journey aboard a century-old train, marveling at the pristine beauty of the Shargan and Tara National Park. Prepare to be transported back in time as we traverse this engineering marvel, soaking in the unspoiled wilderness and rich history of the region.
As we cross the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina, our next destination is the charming town of Višegrad. Despite its slow and sleepy atmosphere, Višegrad holds a special place in literary history, thanks to the renowned novel "The Bridge on the Drina" by Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andrić. This literary masterpiece vividly portrays the rich tapestry of history, culture, and religious diversity that has shaped the region over centuries. The iconic bridge, central to Andrić's narrative, stands as a silent witness to the passage of time and the coexistence of different civilizations. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bridge serves as a symbol of the town's cultural significance. During our visit to Višegrad, we'll have the opportunity to explore this architectural marvel and walk on these ancient stones. Next stop in Višegrad will be Stone Town, a new complex that shows us the timeline of the history of Bosnia. From ancient origins to pivotal moments in history, this innovative exhibit offers a glimpse into the past, presenting a vision of what the town "could have been."
After a lunch break we’ll leave Višegrad and continue on our way to Sarajevo where we’ll reach in the evening.
