In the morning your #destinationserbia guide will pick you up from your accommodation. We set off to Užice and begin our tour on Partisans Square. Built two decades after the establishment of the Užice Republic, this square stands as a remarkable example of urban planning from the former Yugoslavia era. Once featured in prominent architectural magazines across world, it was designed to showcase the strength and modernity of the socialist country. Although the statue of Josip Broz Tito that once graced the square was removed in 1991, its legacy remains ingrained in the city's history.
From Partisans Square, we'll take a leisurely stroll through the town center, making our way to the National Museum of Užice. Housed in a building originally constructed as the National Bank before World War II, this museum offers a glimpse into the city's past. It served as a Partisans Command post after the liberation of Užice, with underground tunnels repurposed for weapons and ammunition production during that time.
Continuing our exploration, we head to Kadinjača, a hill located 14 kilometers from Užice. It was the site of the final battle of the Užice Republic on November 29, 1941. Here, the bravery of ordinary citizens—bakers, blacksmiths, and workers—stood against thousands of Nazi soldiers. Their heroic sacrifice is immortalized in the monument complex that stands as a tribute to their courage.
Returning to Užice, our journey takes a historical turn as we visit the medieval Užice Fortress. Dating back to the 14th century, this fortress served as a crucial defense point along the trade route linking Constantinople and Dubrovnik. Partially reconstructed in recent years, it offers panoramic views of Užice from its perch atop a cliff overlooking the Đetinja River.
In the afternoon, our tour concludes, and you'll be dropped off back at your accommodation.
Optionally, we can arrange a traditional Western Serbian lunch paired with rakija tasting at a nearby local household, offering a panoramic view over Užice.
