As you drive east toward the Romanian border, hear intriguing stories about the historical ties between Serbia and Romania, as well as the fascinating past of the Banat region, once a part of the mighty Habsburg Empire. Before reaching your destination, take a short break for coffee and refreshments.
Upon arrival in Timișoara, begin your walking tour at the Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This monumental Orthodox church, with its striking Moldavian-style towers and mosaic-decorated interior, is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of national identity and resistance.
In front of the cathedral lies Victory Square, a wide boulevard framed by neo-Romanian and Secessionist buildings — a true architectural promenade. This very square was the epicenter of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989. Here, thousands of people stood in defiance of Ceaușescu’s regime, and Timișoara became the first city in Romania to rise up, eventually triggering the fall of Communism in the country.
From Victory Square, continue toward Liberty Square, the oldest square in the city. Once a military parade ground during the Austrian Empire, today it hosts elegant pink and white baroque buildings, the Old City Hall, and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, protector against floods and diseases — a reminder of the city's imperial roots.
A short walk takes you to Union Square, the most beautiful and colorful of them all. Framed by palaces, museums, and grand churches — including the Roman Catholic Cathedral (Dom) and the Serbian Orthodox Church — this square reflects the multicultural spirit of Timișoara, where Romanians, Serbs, Hungarians, Germans, and others have lived side by side for centuries. The pastel facades and laid-back vibe make this a perfect spot to soak in the city’s unique charm. As you stroll through these interconnected squares, pass notable sights such as the Opera House, the Huniade Castle (the oldest building in the city), and many examples of Austro-Hungarian and Art Nouveau architecture, witnessing how the city grew as a cultural and industrial center of the region.
After the guided part of the tour, have free time to explore the city on your own, enjoy a delicious Romanian lunch, shop in the bustling pedestrian zone, or simply relax at one of the charming terraces and observe the rhythm of this fascinating European city.
In the late afternoon, begin your journey back to Belgrade, carrying impressions of a city where East meets West, and history meets vibrant modern life.
