Tour Description

In the morning, your #destinationserbia tour guide will pick you up from your accommodation. We embark on a drive south and in approximately 2,5h we’ll arrive to our first place of visit – Žiča Monastery.

We will visit Žiča and admire its striking red facade and elegant architecture, which serve as a testament to Serbia's medieval heritage and Orthodox faith. We’ll learn about its founding by Stefan I, the inaugural Serbian crowned king, and its pivotal role as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church following its independence in 1219. Delve into centuries of history as we discover how Žiča Monastery served as the coronation church for the esteemed Nemanjić royal dynasty, witnessing the crowning of seven Serbian kings within its magnificent walls.

Next on our way is a fascinating Maglič Fortress. Dating back to the 13th century, this fortress stands proudly atop a hill, providing breathtaking views of the valley of the Ibar River. Built to safeguard the main roadways of medieval Serbia and the connections between its various regions, Maglič Fortress also served to protect the nearby monasteries As we approach, the fortress's towering walls seem impenetrable, a testament to its strategic position and formidable defenses. Its elevated location has helped preserve its medieval architecture remarkably well, making it one of the best-preserved fortresses in Serbia. Adding to its allure, Maglič Fortress is often shrouded in fog, lending it a mystical and mysterious aura. Indeed, the fortress's name, derived from the Serbian word for fog, "Magla," only adds to its enigmatic charm.

Finally, we reach Studenica Monastery. Nestled amidst the serene landscape, this monastery has stood as a beacon of spiritual and cultural significance since its establishment in the 12th century. As we approach, the grandeur of Studenica comes into view, with its impressive white marble facade and Romanesque architecture. Founded by Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, Studenica Monastery holds a special place in Serbian history as a symbol of religious devotion and artistic achievement. Step inside to discover its richly adorned frescoes, which depict scenes from the life of Christ and the lives of Serbian saints. Marvel at the intricate craftsmanship of its stone carvings and decorative elements, reflecting the monastery's enduring legacy as a center of medieval art and culture.

On the way back to Belgrade, we'll make a stop for lunch at one of the oldest "kafanas" in Serbia, where we'll enjoy the tastes of Serbia and reflect on the day's adventures.

We'll reach Belgrade in the evening, when your tour guide will drop you off at your accommodation.
