Iron Gate - A Journey Through Time

Iron Gate - A Journey Through Time

The Danube was the border for most of human civilization's existence. The natural boundary between cultures, peoples, civilizations, and religions. However, the Danube's banks were also a meeting place and a breeding ground for cultures that shaped humanity's history.

Furthermore, the natural splendors of the Djerdap National Park and the mighty Danube gorge will take your breath away.

Tour Description

Tour Description

In the morning, your #destinationserbia guide will pick you up from your accommodation. The road takes us east to the Djerdap National Park.

After approximately 2 hours of driving, we reach our first destination, Golubac Fortress. Dating back to the 14th century, this fortress has stood proudly atop a rock overlooking the river, serving as a guardian of the Djerdap gorge. Listen to the tales of its rulers and the knights who defended it. Originally constructed by the Hungarians in the early 1330s, the fortress changed hands between Serbs, Hungarians and Ottomans but remained unconquered in battle—a testament to its formidable defenses.

After exploring the fortress we continue driving through the Djerdap gorge, taking in the stunning scenery along the way, until we arrive at our next stop, the archeological site of Lepenski Vir. For decades, this site has piqued the interest of world archaeologists, as well as visitors. This over 9000-year-old settlement, deemed the cradle of European civilization, offers insights into our ancestors' way of life along the riverbanks. We’ll see earliest monumental sculptures in European art history as we delve into this ancient site's mysteries.

Leaving Lepenski Vir behind, our route leads us to the Mali and Veliki Kazan gorges, where we pause at a lookout point to admire the natural beauty shaped by the Danube and Mother Nature.

*Optionally, we can go for a speedboat cruise departing from Tekija (if weather conditions allow, since waters on Danube are often not suitable for cruising and boats can be booked in advance for days in high season). This thrilling cruise, lasting about an hour, unveils hidden gems along the Danube, including Trajan’s Plaque—an ancient Roman monument narrating Emperor Trajan's conquests in Dacia—the Sculpture of King Decebalus, and the Mraconia Monastery.*

On the way back, we will take a lunch break at Kapetan Misa’s hill, a local household with an amazing view, offering delightful local specialities of East Serbia (optionaly we can choose some of the fish restaurants on the river). Return to Belgrade in the evening hours. Drop off to your accommodation in Belgrade.
